El rey Lear es la más cruel de todas las tragedias de Shakespeare; los sucesos que se presentan son tan terribles que, durante más de 150 años, la obra se representó solo en versiones suavizadas. No solo es el hecho de que le saquen los ojos a alguien en plena escena, sino que Shakespeare tampoco le concede al espectador ningún descanso, ninguna explicación convincente ni consuelo alguno en la descripción elocuente de un dolor tan poderoso que primero le cuesta al rey la razón y, finalmente, la vida… y no solo a él. No se trata tanto de motivos psicológicamente verosímiles, sino más bien de la representación del mal como fuerza bruta, como una errónea creación fatal del mundo. Cuando finalmente los malhechores se enredan en sus intrigas, hacen que los buenos también fracasen.
